Grounds Services

At the Maui Fair, Teens-On-Call / Teenforce students provide Grounds Services which include providing colorful 55 gallon rubbish barrels (with environmental artwork painted by area school students), plus recycling baskets … placing thru out Fairgrounds and maintaining during the four day event.

“Our fairgoing – families are very good about placing their rubbish and recyclables into correct barrel / basket” according to Maluhia Riley and Ikaika Kaina, program crew leaders.  Teens-On-Call Recycle Program also provides these and other services for special events such as Wailuku First Fridays, numerous cultural festivals and outdoor concerts.

“Reduce – Reuse – Recycle” has become a popular concept for people aware of the growing need to reduce landfill volume while converting ‘trash to cash’ or re-purpose of materials for further use.  With this in mind, Teens-On-Call has operated a longtime ‘visitor-industry recycling program’ whereby adult supervisors conduct “elite dumpster mining operations” where large amounts of useful recyclables end-up from departing hotel visitors, “according to ‘recycling-guru’ Brian McCafferty.  Teens-On-Call also conducts ‘house and property clean-ups’ for realtors plus construction site clean-ups, both which provide reusable household items and lumber!  Household items are donated to those who need; and lumber is de-nailed / cleaned by students for re-use in future projects.  “Our students save plenty lumber for reuse;  learn safe use of hand tools; are paid an educational stipend and fed a good meal on all these recycling work skills training projects”, according to Keoki Raymond, Teenforce Building Trades Trainer.

Mahalo to Maui Fair Alliance for student Grounds Service opportunities, and the MCCC work line for coming to fairgrounds each midnight to deep clean the entire site for the next day’s activities.

Aloha & Mahalo!
